The Berry Companies Acquire the Historic 5 & 10 Store

For generations of locals and visitors alike, the North Conway 5 & 10 Store has been more than just a shop—it’s a small but meaningful piece of the village’s story.

Now, that story is entering a new chapter.

The Berry Companies, in partnership with local entrepreneur Matt Braun, have purchased the historic North Conway 5 & 10 Store property located in the heart of North Conway Village. The goal of the new ownership is simple: preserve the building and its legacy while ensuring it continues to serve the community for years to come.

Matt Braun—owner of Matty B’s Mountainside Café in Bartlett and the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream shop in North Conway Village—will own and operate the store, while The Berry Companies will manage the property.

Originally constructed in the 1800s, the building has served many purposes over the decades, including a general store, pharmacy, post office, and insurance office before becoming the beloved five-and-dime store in 1939.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004, the North Conway 5 & 10 Store remains one of the few unchanged fixtures on Main Street. Its antique wooden counters, glass dividers, and shelves filled with nostalgic goods—from marbles and jump ropes to parade gloves and oilcloth—have long created a shopping experience that feels rooted in another era.

“Our intent is simple: protect what makes this place special, honor its history, and improve upon what’s there with some updates,” said Braun.

Because of the building’s historic designation, any work must maintain the property’s architectural integrity—something both Braun and The Berry Companies see as an important responsibility.

“We are excited to partner with Matt on a project that values preservation, local ownership, and the character that makes North Conway Village what it is,” said Alec Tarberry.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to supporting the village’s unique mix of historic buildings, locally owned businesses, and vibrant Main Street energy.

A reopening date and ribbon-cutting event for the store will be announced on social media in the coming weeks.
